S6 line between Ratingen and Essen remains closed until 2026

Since a landslide in January 2024, the S6 S-Bahn line between Essen and Ratingen-Hösel has been closed - and is expected to remain so until the first half of 2026.

Deutsche Bahn is waiting for the planning approval procedure and authorisation from the Federal Railway Authority before construction work can begin. Once the construction companies have been commissioned, the construction period is expected to last around six months. Until then, replacement services will continue as follows:

Until 15 November 2024

  • Monday to Friday, 4.30 a.m. to 8 p.m.: S 6 trains will run between Cologne and Ratingen Ost and between Kettwig and Essen Hbf.
  • Rail replacement service (SEV): Buses run between Ratingen Ost and Kettwig.

Change from 16 November 2024:

  • Monday to Friday, 4:30 am to 8 pm and Saturday, 10:20 am to approx. 8 pm: S 6 trains will run between Cologne and Ratingen Ost and between Kettwig and Essen Hbf.
  • SEV: Buses will run between Ratingen Ost and Kettwig.


Until 15 November 2024: In the morning and evening hours

  • Monday to Friday, 8 pm to 4.30 am; Saturday, Sunday and public holidays all day:
  • The S 6 runs between Cologne and Düsseldorf-Rath Mitte and between Kettwig and Essen Hbf.
  • SEV: Buses run between Unterrath Kirche (S 1/S 11 connection) // Düsseldorf-Rath Mitte (S 6 connection) and Kettwig.

Change from 16 November 2024: In the morning and evening hours

  • Monday to Friday, 8 pm to 4.30 am; Saturday, until 10.20 am and from 8 pm; Sunday, all day: The S 6 runs between Cologne and Düsseldorf-Rath Mitte and between Kettwig and Essen Hbf.
  • SEV: Buses run between Düsseldorf-Unterrath (S 1/S 11 connection) / Düsseldorf-Rath Mitte (S 6 connection) and Kettwig.

The timetable changes are included in the VRR and DB online timetable information before the start of the construction work.

Tickets are not available on the buses. Tickets for buses and trains can be purchased online via the app or at the stations (not at the bus stops) from the ticket machines or in the customer centres.
